What is the city's greatest improvement need?
A new report lists Arkansas as the 8th most obese state in the country. According to the seventh annual F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America's Future report from the Trust for America's Health, Arkansas' adult obesity rate is 30.1 percent.
The Mayo Clinic describes walking as a gentle, low-impact exercise that can ease you into a higher level of fitness and health.
Charleston has 2 walking tracks. The one located at the City Park on the east end of town is paved and equals one-third of a mile. The walking trail at the Baseball/Softball Complex on South School Street is unpaved and equals nine-tenths of a mile. In addition, the trail at the Baseball/Softball Complex also includes 10 exercise stations outfitted with equipment for a number of upper and lower body exercises and stretches.
According to the Mayo Clinic, walking can help you lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol, lower blood pressure, reduce your risk of or manage type 2 diabetes, manage your weight, improve your mood and help you stay strong and fit.
