Charleston Expands Skate Park

Posted by: editor

On July 1, City of Charleston employees, along with a crew from American Ramp Company installed a new half-pipe at the Charleston Skate Park.  The Skate Park expansion was funded in part through a $15000 grant from the Arkansas Department of Rural Services.  The original Skate Park equipment, installed in 2006, was also made possible thanks to a $15000 grant from the Arkansas Department of Rural Services.

As with any sport, safety precautions should be taken when skateboarding.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends protective gear such as closed, slip resistant shoes, helmets, and padding.  Falls and being struck or striking as object frequently occur during sporting activities.  According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, during 2007 an accurate estimation of the number of head injuries seen in hospital emergency rooms due to skateboarding/scooters was 16,477.  The number of head injuries attributed to baseball and softball during that same time period was 25,079.

Currently, there are several groups touting the benefits of skateboarding as autism therapy.  For more information on their efforts, visit http://www.skateboardingforautism.org/ and http://www.askate.org/.
